STRANGE NAVY STEALTH SHIP - SEA SHADOW - FAIL!
Declassified $170 million Cold War Stealth boat called the Sea Shadow is snapped up for $2.5 million… By James Nye August 12, 2012 The world's first and only functioning stealth ship the Sea Shadow is reaching the end of the line - as it prepares to be broken up for scrap in San Francisco. Sold to the Bay Ship & Yacht Co. for $2.5 million in an auction that concluded in mid-June, the 27-year-old Sea Shadow is still considered top secret and wont allowed to remain sea-worthy in the hands of a private firm. Costing $172 million to develop, the vessel, which is able to evade radar detection due to its angular shape was purchased by as part of a package with a giant submersible barge called the Hughes Mining Barge or the HMB-1. The US Navy had been trying to give away the 164 ft. long Sea Shadow since 2006 after Pentagon chiefs said they no longer had any use for it. Its special coatings, sharp angles and other secret attachments allowed it to slip under radar and sonar. Measuring 70 ft. wide, the Sea Shadow was capable of a maximum speed of 14 knots and had the ability to operate winds of 17 to 21 knots. |
