CONTROVERSIAL FROZEN BLOOD SCULPTURE - MELTS!
Melting moments July 4 2002 Melted ... Marc Quinn's Self. A controversial artwork, made with nine pints of the artist's own blood, has reportedly melted after builders turned off a freezer at an art dealer's apartment in London. The work, Self, was a model of artist Marc Quinn's head made with his own blood. A friend of the dealer, Charles Saatchi said: "It cost Charles a vast sum to buy and there was quite a row when he saw what had happened." The mishap occurred after Mr Saatchi and new love, television cook Nigella Lawson, moved into an apartment on Eaton Square in central London. The sparse bachelor kitchen was being extended and builders and decorators were called in. "It all went wrong when the builders started to take the old kitchen to pieces," the friend said. "They turned the freezer off, and moved it away from the wall. After a couple of days, though, a pool of what looked suspiciously like blood appeared around the freezer. "The builders looked inside and saw, to their horror, that one of Saatchi's pieces of modern art had melted." A work of the artist, entitled Bloodhead, was featured in the Art Gallery of NSW's Body show a few years ago.
